Civics aims for top spot

February 2011:
Civics will aim at closing in on the first spot of the Namibia Premier League (NPL) when they take on Eleven Arrows in an away fixture at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay on Saturday.
Civics moved steadily on the table as the second round resumed in January, by recording two victories and losing one match.

They opened the second round fixtures with a 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates, while they went on to beat Oshakati City with the same margin in the following match, before routing Blue Boys 5-2 in their last match a weekend ago. The scorers in the Oshakati City match were new signings, Nigerian striker Mabasa and the ever present Costa Khaiseb.

Mabasa, Khaiseb, Heini Isaacks and Bobby Kaapama also scored in the Blue Boys goal feast to give the side the necessary morale boosting confidence ahead of their encounter against Arrows. Civics are now third on the log with 23 points from 14 games, only two points behind log leaders Black Africa and a point behind second placed Ramblers.

Civics coach Ali Akan at one of his team training sessions late last week, said the title can go to anyone, but belives that his team has what it takes to walk away with the N$1 million in the end. With only eight matches to go before the season comes to a close, Akan says that his team has a 'realistic chance' to clinch it.

“I can tell you now that it is going to be a close race among the top four teams in the league, but I know that my team will land this title. We have the players and we have the ability to make it,” he said. On Saturday, Civics hope to collect the needed three points to further boost their chances to the league throne, as the opposition has not been too impressive this season, as they are languishing in mid table. The match starts at 15h00.
