Civics staged a dramatic comeback to beat Ramblers 3-2 at the Khomasdal Stadium on Wednesday night. Civics took the lead towards the end of an uneventful first half when Victor Helu stabbed in a loose ball in the box after Ramblers keeper Lukas Hashiti fumbled the ball and Likius Hafeni failed to clear it.
But barely three minutes later Ramblers were back on level terms when their Nigerian striker Paul Dixon headed in a freekick by captain Mani Martin.
Ramblers pressed hard after the break and took the lead after a great goal by Dixon. Bernadine Mbilizi broke clear down the right wing, whipped in a cross and Dixon volleyed the ball into the far corner.
But Civics immediately struck back from the restart when Rudi Louw centred the ball and Victor Helu struck a 20m shot into the net.
The match took a dramatic twist midway through the second half when Civics defender Donnelly Nel was red carded after punching Benson Nwokoro and tempers continued to flare when Dixon and Civics keeper Erwan Ofouya collided in mid air and Dixon had to leave the field injured.
Despite being a man down Civics finished stronger, especially after coach Ricardo Mannetti brought on Eslin Kamuhanga and Ashley Jossop in the final stages.
Kamuhanga immediately made an impression with his tricky runs and it wasn’t long before he made an impact. Jossop sent a perfect pass to an unmarked Kamuhanga who leapt up high to send a spectacular volley into the net. It was a great goal, which gave Civics a 3-2 victory and saw them move up to second position on the log. They are now level with log leaders SKW on 12 points, but with a slightly inferior goal difference.
